Yesterday when we arrived in the D.C. area the weather was beautiful. I had reserved a full size car for our visit and when we got to the counter I asked if they had any Toyota’s. The only one they had was a Highlander and would cost an extra $35 for the week. Trav and decided we were on vacation so why not. :-) We have not been sorry at all, in fact I think I found my next present.

Driving from Baltimore, MD to Herndon, VA took just over an hour, probably would have been less but I went left when I should have gone right. We ended up in a town called Frying Pan Springs. Nothing exciting about going there for us except the name. :-) The drive was beautiful. The freeways remind me of the older sections of freeway in LA, just a lot more trees and fewer cars. I kept waiting to hit traffic but never did.

We woke up today to heavy drizzle and a significant drop in temperature, but we did not let that detour us from our intentions of seeing Mt. Vernon and Arlington Cemetery. Once we got to Mt. Vernon Trav and I decided we had come unprepared for this weather. Our first stop was to the gift shop for beanie’s :-) . Mike of course made fun of us California Kids, till I pointed out he has had time to adapt his Floridian self to this cool weather. We found out today it may snow this week, so much for the Union Tribune’s 7 day forecast. :-)

Mt. Vernon was beautiful, we hiked all over the grounds. I don’t think there is an area of the remaining plantation that I could say was more beautiful than any other. We began our visit with a hike through the forest area down to the stables and wharf. We finished our visit with a tour of the house and main buildings. Before we left we had a late lunch/ early dinner at the Mt. Vernon Inn, where we tried the most unique soup, peanut and chestnut soup. It was like warm peanut butter with a touch more flavor.

Arlington Cemetery was an awesome experience. We walked to JFK’s grave, but it was so crowded that I don’t think Travis got the full impact of the scene.
